Great Northwest Bookstore Fire Photography Show

Friday, July 2, 2010 • 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Splendorporium
3421 SE 21st Avenue
Portland, Oregon

Great Northwest Bookstore (3314 S.W. First Avenue) was an antique bookstore owned by Phil Wikelund, and also served as home to Portland painter and poet Walt Curtis. On May 2, the 120-year old building — which was built in 1890 as the Fourth Presbyterian Church and operated as two other churches before Wikelund purchased it — was destroyed in a fire, and among the losses were over 100,000 books. Expenses will run into the tens of thousands just to clean up the mess and, in addition, Wikelund had stopped insurance payments on the building because of money problems.

To help him raise the needed funds, the Splendorporium will hold a photography show featuring photos of the fire and building, with all of the proceeds going to the Great Northwest Bookstore Fire Fund. Books will be available, as well. Members of Lumiatra will give performances during the fundraiser.
